By Detailed Drivers·Published October 4, 2026·Updated October 4, 2026

The 2026 Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lighting is Wednesday, December 2, which is also an NYC DOT Gridlock Alert Day. Expect the blocks from 47th to 52nd Street between Sixth and Madison Avenues to close from mid-afternoon, so cars drop off a block or two away. A First Class SUV for the evening runs $150/hr all-in. Detailed Drivers is a New York chauffeur service rated 5.0 across 188 Google reviews.

Status as of October 4, 2026

  • Lighting: Wednesday, December 2, 2026. Tree arrival: Saturday, November 7 (Rockefeller Center).
  • Not yet announced: ceremony start time, performers, hosts and post-lighting viewing hours.
  • The NYPD posts the year's closures shortly before the ceremony. The closure table below is from the most recent NYPD notice we could find, labeled as the pattern.
  • December 2, 3 and 4, 2026 are all NYC DOT Gridlock Alert Days.
  • We will update this page when the 2026 time and closures are published.

When is the 2026 Rockefeller Center tree lighting?

The tree will be lit on Wednesday, December 2, 2026. Rockefeller Center's official tree page says the 2026 tree arrives November 7 and is lit during the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony on December 2, and NBC New York reported the date on September 29. The start time, performers and hosts were still to be announced when we checked, and so were the public visiting hours after the lighting.

The date matters for cars because NYC DOT has made December 2, 3 and 4 Gridlock Alert Days on its 2026 list. Midtown traffic will be slow all day on the 2nd, well before the plaza fills. Radio City Music Hall is next door, and the Christmas Spectacular runs from November 4, 2026 to January 4, 2027, so the same blocks are busy on many evenings, not only lighting night.

Which streets close for the tree lighting?

The NYPD sets the closures and announces them in the days before the ceremony. The most recent closure notice the NYPD has published on nyc.gov is from an earlier year, and we use it as the planning pattern. Expect the 2026 version to cover the same core blocks; the hours and edges may differ.

In that NYPD notice, every spectator had to pass security screening, and umbrellas, large coolers, alcohol, backpacks and large bags were prohibited. Leave bags with the car or at the hotel. The city also treats these blocks as a holiday hot zone: its 2025 holiday permit embargo barred new street permits from late November to January 2 on 48th to 51st Streets between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, on Fifth Avenue from 34th to 59th Street, and around Times Square, Herald Square and Bryant Park.

Where can a car drop you off for the tree lighting?

A block or two outside the closures, on the side of Midtown you will leave from. On the west side, Seventh Avenue in the high 40s and low 50s puts you a short walk from the Sixth Avenue screening points. On the east side, Park Avenue keeps you clear of the Madison Avenue blocks that close. Give the dispatcher both the drop-off corner and a different pickup corner for after the ceremony, because the exit flow rarely matches the way in.

If you are staying in Midtown, ask the hotel which entrance stays open to cars that evening. Our chauffeur service in NYC can wait on an open side street and move when you text. For a dinner nearby, book it so you arrive after the closures lift, or walk to the restaurant and have the car meet you there.

Many visitors skip the ceremony crowd and see the tree on a later evening. That is often easier with a car: the lighting-night closures are gone, though in past seasons the NYPD has kept 49th and 50th Streets between Fifth and Sixth Avenues closed to cars in the evenings. A drop-off on Fifth or Sixth Avenue near 48th or 51st Street is the usual approach.

How do you combine the tree with a show or dinner?

Plan the evening around the blocks rather than the clock. Radio City Music Hall, the tree and many Midtown restaurants sit inside or beside the same closure area, so a single walk can link them. Have the car drop you once on the edge of the area, walk between the plaza, the theater and dinner, and set one pickup at the end of the night on an open avenue. That is faster than asking the car to move you two blocks through barricades and crowds, and it keeps the car out of the slowest traffic of the evening.

Should you book hourly service for the tree lighting?

Hourly service fits best. The ceremony end time is hard to predict, the walk out is slow, and the car may need to reposition when a block closes. An hourly car service in New York City keeps the vehicle nearby without rebooking, and groups fit together in a Sprinter van in NYC.

VehicleHourly (est.)3-hour minimum (est.)Tree-lighting fit

If your chauffeur isn't at your booked pickup address by your scheduled pickup time, we refund the full fare. Every booking, every vehicle, every city, 24/7.

Flying in for the tree lighting?

Land before midday if you can. The Gridlock Alert designation covers the whole day, and Midtown hotels near the plaza are the hardest to reach in the late afternoon. Estimated all-in Business Sedan fares to Midtown are $220 all-in from JFK, $180 all-in from LaGuardia and $220 all-in from Newark, with the airport access fee and MTA and state per-trip charges included. Book with your flight number through our LaGuardia car service or the JFK and Newark pages. Airport pickups include 45 minutes of complimentary waiting for domestic flights and 60 minutes for international flights, starting when the flight actually lands. We track your flight.

What should you send when you book a tree-lighting car?

  • Pickup address and the hotel entrance that stays open to cars that afternoon.
  • Your drop-off corner and a separate pickup corner for after the ceremony.
  • Passenger count, and whether anyone needs a shorter walk.
  • Dinner or show addresses, so the hours you book match the evening.
  • The mobile number for the chauffeur to text.
