How busy are NYC airports at Thanksgiving?
Very, and getting busier. According to the Port Authority's November 2025 traffic report, the 2025 Thanksgiving travel period was the busiest in the agency's history: 3.3 million passengers passed through its airports over the eight days from November 24 to December 1, beating the 2024 record by 33,000. That total covers JFK, Newark and LaGuardia, plus New York Stewart.
The roads were just as full. The Port Authority's 2025 holiday advisory expected about 8.8 million travelers across its airports and crossings that week, including roughly 5.5 million vehicles on its bridges and tunnels. It suspended construction at its crossings from 5 a.m. on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving to 5 a.m. the following Monday to keep lanes open, and it named Sunday, November 30 and Monday, December 1 as the busiest airport days.
Which days are busiest? (2025 official data, 2026 calendar)
TSA publishes daily checkpoint counts. The table shows Thanksgiving week 2025 nationwide and the weekday each one falls on in 2026. National numbers are not a JFK forecast, but the shape of the week is the same in New York: a heavy run-up, a quiet holiday, and the biggest crush on the way home.

Sunday, November 30, 2025 was the busiest day TSA had ever recorded at that point, with 3,134,613 people screened, according to its checkpoint travel numbers. Before the holiday, TSA's 2025 Thanksgiving announcement had projected more than 17.8 million screenings from Tuesday, November 25 to Tuesday, December 2. If you can fly home on Saturday or on the Tuesday after, you skip the peak.
When is getaway-day traffic worst in New York?
Thanksgiving is a road holiday first. AAA's 2025 Thanksgiving forecast projected a record 81.8 million travelers nationally, at least 73 million of them by car. Its traffic partner INRIX rated the Tuesday before Thanksgiving worst from noon to 9 p.m. and the Wednesday worst from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., with minimal traffic on Thanksgiving Day. For the New York area, INRIX flagged New York to the Hamptons on the Long Island Expressway as one of the worst corridors, peaking Tuesday afternoon.
NYC DOT adds its own warning. Its 2026 Gridlock Alert Days include Tuesday, November 24, 2026, the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, as well as November 18 and 19. On those days the city adjusts traffic signals in real time and asks people to avoid driving when possible. Our guide to NYC Gridlock Alert Days explains how to plan airport runs around each one.
The practical rule for an airport run from Manhattan on the Tuesday or Wednesday: leave before late morning if you can, and if you are flying in the evening, leave earlier than a normal weekday. The two-hour and three-hour airport arrival guidance from the Port Authority applies on top of the drive.
How early should you leave for JFK, LaGuardia or Newark?
Start from the airport rule and work backwards. The Port Authority asks domestic passengers to arrive at least two hours before departure and international passengers at least three hours before. It also warned in 2025 that ongoing construction at JFK had changed the roadway network and the for-hire vehicle pickup areas, so allow extra time at the terminal end as well as on the highway.
For a JFK flight, book through our JFK airport car service page and give the airline and terminal so the chauffeur goes to the right departures door. LaGuardia is the closest airport to most of Manhattan, though the same getaway-day traffic applies; use our LaGuardia car service. Newark trips from Manhattan cross the Hudson by tunnel, part of the Port Authority crossings that carried about 5.5 million vehicles over the 2025 holiday week; book through our Newark airport car service.
Parking is the other reason travelers switch to a car service that week. The Port Authority urged drivers in 2025 to pre-book airport parking, warning that drive-up parkers would pay a peak surcharge and might not find a space.

What does a car service add on the busiest days?
The fare does not change on Thanksgiving week. What you buy is certainty about the pickup on the days when rideshare queues and taxi lines are longest. On-Time Guarantee: if your chauffeur is not at the pickup address on your booking by your scheduled pickup time, we refund the full fare. It covers every booking, every vehicle and every city, 24/7. The guarantee applies to the address and time on your booking; if you change either, it follows the updated details we confirm. For airport pickups we track your flight, so your pickup time follows the actual landing and your chauffeur is waiting when you land and texts you.
Airport pickups include 45 minutes of complimentary waiting for domestic flights and 60 minutes for international flights, starting when the flight actually lands. We track your flight. Every sedan and SUV airport pickup includes inside meet-and-greet at no extra charge: your chauffeur waits inside the terminal at arrivals and texts you when you land. For Sprinter vans, minibuses and coaches, the chauffeur stays with the vehicle, so inside meet-and-greet is an add-on: a second team member meets your group inside, at an extra cost quoted at booking. The meet-and-greet process is explained in our airport meet-and-greet guide.
Families with car seats, ski bags or a lot of luggage usually need a First Class SUV, which seats up to 6 with room for 6 bags. Larger family groups fit in a Sprinter van in NYC with seating for up to 14. If you are staying in the city for the parade on Thursday morning, our Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade transportation guide covers the closures and drop-off points.
What about Thanksgiving dinner rides around the city?
Thanksgiving Day itself is the calmest day of the week on the roads, so a dinner run to relatives in Westchester, Long Island or New Jersey is usually straightforward. If the evening has several stops, or you do not want to guess when dinner will end, an hourly car service in New York City runs $120/hr all-in for a Business Sedan or $150/hr all-in for a First Class SUV, with a 3-hour minimum ($440 all-in for the SUV).
What should you send when you book a Thanksgiving airport ride?
- Airline, flight number and terminal for every leg, outbound and return.
- Pickup address, including the building entrance and any doorman instructions.
- Passenger count, bags, car seats and anything oversized.
- The mobile number of the traveler, so the chauffeur can text on arrival.
- The return date: the Sunday and Monday after Thanksgiving book up first.
Compare vehicles on our all-in airport car rates page, then book through Thanksgiving airport car reservations or call (888) 420-0177. For the rest of the holiday season, see the Detailed Drivers blog and our Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve guide. Sedan and SUV bookings receive a full refund when cancelled at least 48 hours before the scheduled pickup time. Sprinter bookings receive a full refund when cancelled at least 72 hours before the scheduled pickup time. Cancellations inside the applicable notice period are charged in full. If your flight is cancelled, there is no cancellation charge. These windows apply unless your quote says otherwise: event bookings and high-demand dates can carry a different window because of event pricing and availability, and your quote will state it.
Thanksgiving 2026 NYC airport travel FAQs
What is the busiest day to fly out of NYC for Thanksgiving 2026?
For departures, the heaviest days are usually the Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving, which in 2026 are November 24 and 25. The busiest days overall are the returns: in 2025 the Port Authority expected Sunday, November 30 and Monday, December 1 to be the busiest at JFK, LaGuardia and Newark, and TSA screened a record 3,134,613 people nationwide that Sunday. The 2026 equivalents are Sunday, November 29 and Monday, November 30.
How early should I leave for JFK the day before Thanksgiving?
The Port Authority asks domestic travelers to be at the airport at least two hours before departure and international travelers at least three hours before. Add the drive on top: INRIX, in AAA's 2025 forecast, rated the Wednesday before Thanksgiving worst for driving from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., so a morning departure from Manhattan avoids the worst of it.
How much is a car service to JFK on Thanksgiving week?
The same as any other week. Detailed Drivers estimates are $220 all-in for a Business Sedan and $270 all-in for a First Class SUV between JFK and Midtown, all-in, with the airport access fee and MTA and state per-trip charges included. There is no holiday surcharge.
Is Thanksgiving Day a good day to fly from New York?
Usually, yes. In 2025 TSA screened 1,559,165 people on Thanksgiving Day nationwide, roughly half the Sunday-after peak, and AAA's 2025 forecast expected minimal road traffic on the holiday itself. The trade-off is fewer flights and a Thanksgiving dinner schedule to fit around.
What happens to my car booking if my Thanksgiving flight is cancelled?
There is no cancellation charge when your flight is cancelled. Free cancellation up to 48 hours before pickup for sedans and SUVs, 72 hours for Sprinters. No charge if your flight is cancelled. Event and high-demand bookings follow the window in your quote. For pickups, we track the flight, so a delay moves the pickup to the actual landing time.
Is the Tuesday before Thanksgiving a Gridlock Alert Day in 2026?
Yes. NYC DOT lists Tuesday, November 24, 2026 as a Gridlock Alert Day, along with Wednesday, November 18 and Thursday, November 19. Wednesday, November 25 is not on the 2026 list, but AAA and INRIX data show it is one of the heaviest road days nationally.
