Important: AUS Has No Light Rail Service
Austin does not have direct rail connection to its airport. The Capital MetroRail Red Line serves North Austin but does not connect to AUS. A rail extension has been discussed for years but is not operational as of 2026. Capital Metro Bus Route 20 connects AUS to downtown, but takes 40-60 minutes with transfers and is impractical with luggage.
For all practical purposes, car service, rideshare, or a personal vehicle are the transportation options from Austin Airport. Given Austin's traffic (especially during SXSW and F1), prebooked Austin car service with a no-surge rate is the most predictable option.
The Barbara Jordan Terminal
All commercial airlines at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport operate from the Barbara Jordan Terminal as of April 1, 2026. Use Barbara Jordan for check-in, security screening, arrivals and departures, and confirm your current gate with your airline.
The separate South Terminal had its final day of operations on March 31, 2026. Allegiant and Frontier began operating from Barbara Jordan on April 1. The airport confirms these changes in its South Terminal closure notice; travelers should follow current Barbara Jordan signs and airline instructions.
AUS Expansion: What's Coming
Austin's airport has consistently ranked as one of the fastest-growing in the U.S. by passenger volume. A major terminal expansion and new concourse (adding 14+ gates) is in planning and early construction phases. Expect construction activity and possible gate assignment changes through 2026-2028.
Barbara Jordan Terminal — All Commercial Airlines
Check in at Barbara Jordan for your commercial flight, including Southwest, American, Delta, United, Allegiant and Frontier. Airline counters and departure gates can change; use your boarding pass and current airport displays.
Lounges: American Admirals Club, Delta Sky Club (select gates area). No United Club or Alaska Lounge currently.
South Terminal — Closed
The South Terminal closed on April 1, 2026, after its final operating day on March 31. It is no longer a check-in or departure terminal for commercial flights.

Austin Traffic: Why Car Service Timing Matters
Austin has one of the worst traffic growth problems in the U.S. The city's population more than doubled from 2010-2023, but highway infrastructure has not kept pace. I-35, the primary north-south artery, is under a years-long major reconstruction project. Mopac (Loop 1) and SH-183 are consistently congested during rush hour.
The airport is on the southeast side of Austin. Destinations in North Austin (the Domain, Round Rock, Cedar Park) require either navigating I-35 or taking the US-183/SH-71/Loop 1 connector system, which has its own bottlenecks. Plan accordingly.

Austin hosts several events that create massive transportation demand. AUS Airport operates near full capacity during these periods, and Uber/Lyft surge pricing is severe. Pre-booked car service is critical.
SXSW (South by Southwest)
