Austin Airport (AUS) Terminal Guide 2026
One of America's fastest-growing airports. No light rail. SXSW capacity crunch every March. Tesla, Apple, Meta, and Dell all a short drive away. Here's everything you need to navigate AUS.

18-22 miles, ~25-40 min
Important: AUS Has No Light Rail Service
Austin does not have direct rail connection to its airport. The Capital MetroRail Red Line serves North Austin but does not connect to AUS. A rail extension has been discussed for years but is not operational as of 2026. Capital Metro Bus Route 20 connects AUS to downtown, but takes 40-60 minutes with transfers and is impractical with luggage.
For all practical purposes, car service, rideshare, or a personal vehicle are the transportation options from Austin Airport. Given Austin's traffic (especially during SXSW and F1), prebooked car service with a flat rate is the most predictable option.
The Barbara Jordan Terminal
Austin-Bergstrom uses a single terminal building named the Barbara Jordan Terminal, opened in 1999 when the airport replaced the old Mueller Municipal Airport. The terminal has expanded several times since, with significant additions in 2018-2019 (South Terminal expansion with 9 gates) and ongoing construction projects.
The terminal has two main concourses: the original Barbara Jordan Terminal (north/main section) and the South Terminal (added 2019). Both are connected post-security. All airlines operate from the same terminal — no interterminal transportation required.
AUS Expansion: What's Coming
Austin's airport has consistently ranked as one of the fastest-growing in the U.S. by passenger volume. A major terminal expansion and new concourse (adding 14+ gates) is in planning and early construction phases. Expect construction activity and possible gate assignment changes through 2026-2028.
Main Terminal (North/Original)
Gates 1-30 (approximately). Houses American Airlines, Delta, United, Alaska, JetBlue, and international carriers. The main check-in hall, primary security checkpoints, and most lounges are here.
Lounges: American Admirals Club, Delta Sky Club (select gates area). No United Club or Alaska Lounge currently.
South Terminal
Opened 2019. Gates in the 30s. Houses Southwest Airlines, Frontier, Spirit, and some domestic low-cost carriers. Dedicated security checkpoint. Connected to main terminal post-security.
Note: Southwest is the largest carrier at AUS by flight frequency. If flying Southwest, go to the South Terminal check-in area.

Austin Traffic: Why Car Service Timing Matters
Austin has one of the worst traffic growth problems in the U.S. The city's population more than doubled from 2010-2023, but highway infrastructure has not kept pace. I-35, the primary north-south artery, is under a years-long major reconstruction project. Mopac (Loop 1) and SH-183 are consistently congested during rush hour.
The airport is on the southeast side of Austin. Destinations in North Austin (the Domain, Round Rock, Cedar Park) require either navigating I-35 or taking the US-183/SH-71/Loop 1 connector system, which has its own bottlenecks. Plan accordingly.
| Route | Off-Peak | Rush Hour (7-9 AM, 4-7 PM) |
|---|---|---|
| AUS to Downtown Austin (6th St / Congress Ave) | 15-20 min | 25-40 min |
| AUS to East Austin (East 6th / Red River) | 15-22 min | 25-38 min |
| AUS to South Congress (SoCo) | 18-25 min | 28-42 min |
| AUS to The Domain (North Austin tech) | 25-35 min | 45-65 min via I-35 or Loop 1 |
| AUS to Round Rock / Dell HQ | 35-45 min | 50-75 min |
| AUS to Tesla Giga Texas | 15-22 min | 22-35 min |

Austin's Tech Corridor: Corporate Destinations
Austin has become one of America's premier tech hubs. The relocation of Tesla's headquarters from Palo Alto to Austin (Giga Texas in 2022), Oracle's HQ move from San Francisco to Austin (2021), Apple's $1B Campus 2 in North Austin, and Meta's significant Austin office have made the city a top destination for executive business travel.

Major Austin Events: Transportation Impact
Austin hosts several events that create massive transportation demand. AUS Airport operates near full capacity during these periods, and Uber/Lyft surge pricing is severe. Pre-booked car service is critical.
SXSW (South by Southwest)
March, ~10 days300,000+ attendees over 10 days. Film, music, tech conferences. AUS hits record daily passenger counts. Downtown Austin is completely saturated. Uber/Lyft surge routinely hits 4-6x. Book car service 3-4 weeks in advance. Sprinter vans for groups are critical — a 10-person music industry group can share one vehicle for $145-$165/hr rather than 5 surge Ubers.
Austin City Limits (ACL) Music Festival
Two weekends, October75,000+ attendees per day at Zilker Park. Back-to-back weekends mean 6 days of high transportation demand. Shuttle buses serve Zilker Park but car service to/from hotels and AUS is the premium option. Book 2-3 weeks ahead.
Formula 1 United States Grand Prix (COTA)
October/November400,000+ over race weekend at Circuit of the Americas. COTA is 10 miles from AUS (easy airport-to-circuit run), but the entire Austin transportation network is overwhelmed. F1 hospitality guests require black car service. Book immediately when F1 tickets are confirmed.
UT Longhorns Football (Home Games)
September - NovemberDarrell K Royal Memorial Stadium seats 100,000. Home games against ranked opponents cause significant I-35 backups. AUS pickups on game days can run long. Plan extra buffer time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Austin Airport have light rail service?
No. Austin-Bergstrom International Airport does not have direct light rail or metro service. The Capital MetroRail Red Line does not serve AUS. Bus Route 20 connects to downtown but takes 40-60 minutes with transfers. Car service is the primary practical ground transportation option.
Which airlines operate from Austin Airport?
Southwest Airlines (largest by frequency, South Terminal), American Airlines (DFW, CLT, JFK connections), Delta Air Lines (ATL, LAX, SLC), United Airlines (EWR, ORD, SFO, IAH), Alaska Airlines, JetBlue, Frontier, Spirit, British Airways (seasonal), and Aeromexico. All operate from the single Barbara Jordan Terminal.
How far is Austin Airport from downtown Austin?
AUS is 8 miles southeast of downtown Austin. The drive takes 15-25 minutes normally, 25-40 minutes during rush hour. Car service runs $45-$70 for a sedan to downtown.
How far is Tesla Gigafactory from Austin Airport?
Tesla Giga Texas is 12 miles from AUS via TX-130 North, taking 15-22 minutes. Car service runs $55-$80 for a sedan. The facility is also close to COTA (Circuit of the Americas).
How bad is Austin traffic?
Austin consistently ranks among the worst U.S. cities for traffic congestion. I-35 (primary north-south route) is under a major multi-year reconstruction project. Mopac (Loop 1) and US-183 are heavily congested during rush hour. Allow significantly more time for North Austin destinations (Domain, Round Rock, Cedar Park) during morning and evening rush.
When should I book car service for SXSW or F1?
For SXSW: book 3-4 weeks in advance. Vehicles -- especially Sprinter vans for music/tech group travel -- fill up 2-3 weeks before the event. For Formula 1 at COTA: book immediately when your race weekend tickets are confirmed. Both events have severe rideshare surge pricing. Flat-rate car service is the predictable alternative.
