The New SLC Terminal (Opened 2020)
Salt Lake City's old terminal was built in 1960 and expanded piecemeal for decades. In September 2020, the first phase of a brand-new $4.1 billion terminal opened, replacing the entire facility by 2024. It's one of the largest airport construction projects in U.S. history.
The new terminal is a single building — no interterminal buses, no AirTrain shuttles. Concourses A, B, and C connect via a central atrium corridor. Mountain-inspired architecture, floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the Wasatch Range, local Utah art, and a dramatically expanded dining and retail footprint.
If you flew through the old SLC, expect to be disoriented by how good the new one is. Check-in, security, and baggage claim are all faster and less chaotic. The Ground Transportation Center (GTC) directly connects to the terminal on Level 1.
Key construction note: Phase 1 (Concourses A & B) opened September 2020. Phase 2 (Concourse C, international expansion, parking garage completion) wrapped up through 2023-2024. The full facility is now operational.
Concourse-by-Concourse Breakdown
Delta's primary hub concourse at SLC. Gates A1-A28. The Delta Sky Club is located here (Level 2, post-security). Delta runs the most non-stop destinations from Concourse A — transcontinental routes, international connections, and western hub-and-spoke flights.
Southwest Airlines occupies gates at the far end of Concourse A. Frequent service to Las Vegas, Denver, Phoenix, and Los Angeles.
Concourse B handles Delta overflow, all United Airlines flights, American Airlines, and Alaska Airlines. Gates B1-B24. United operates connections to its Denver and San Francisco hubs. American connects to Dallas/Fort Worth and Charlotte.
The Delta Sky Club second location opened in Concourse B as part of Phase 2 construction, serving passengers departing from this wing.
Concourse C is the newest wing, housing JetBlue, Frontier, Spirit, and international arrivals/departures. Gates C1-C14. British Airways operates seasonal London Heathrow service from Concourse C. Delta also operates select international routes from this concourse.
International passengers arriving at Concourse C clear Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on Level 1 before connecting to domestic flights or heading to Ground Transportation.

TRAX Does NOT Serve Ski Resorts
TRAX is excellent for downtown SLC. But it does not go to Park City, Deer Valley, Snowbird, Alta, Brighton, Solitude, or any Wasatch Mountain resort. Car service is required for all mountain destinations. UTA buses serve some canyon access points, but not resort lodges, and ski equipment makes bus travel impractical.
SLC to Ski Resort: Car Service Pricing
Utah markets itself as "The Greatest Snow on Earth," and the ski-season transfer business at SLC is substantial. Major airports in Denver and Las Vegas compete for ski passengers, but SLC has the geographic advantage: you can be on the slopes 45-75 minutes after landing, with the right car service.
The key split is between Cottonwood Canyons (Snowbird, Alta, Brighton, Solitude — closer to SLC via US-189 south) and Park City / Deer Valley (northeast via I-80 East). Both route systems can be delayed by canyon road closures after heavy snowfall.
| Destination | Distance | Drive Time | Sedan Rate | SUV Rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Downtown SLC | 7 miles | 15-20 min | $55-$75 | $75-$95 |
| Snowbird | 26 miles | 35-50 min | $85-$110 | $120-$155 |
| Alta Ski Area | 28 miles | 40-55 min | $90-$115 | $125-$160 |
| Brighton Resort | 28 miles | 40-55 min | $90-$115 | $125-$160 |
| Solitude Mountain | 27 miles | 38-50 min | $88-$112 | $122-$155 |
| Park City Mountain Resort | 36 miles | 40-60 min | $95-$130 | $140-$175 |
| Deer Valley Resort | 38 miles | 45-65 min | $105-$140 | $150-$185 |

Skiing Utah: What Changes Your Transfer Plan
Canyon Road Closures
- After major storms, UDOT closes Little Cottonwood Canyon (Snowbird/Alta) for avalanche control — sometimes for 2-4 hours
- Big Cottonwood Canyon (Brighton/Solitude) closes less frequently but also subject to closures
- I-80 to Park City rarely closes but speed is reduced to 40-55 mph in heavy snow
- Always book a driver who monitors UDOT alerts and has alternate routing options
Peak Booking Periods
- Christmas/New Year's: Book 3-4 weeks in advance. Most in-demand transfer period
- MLK Weekend (January): Extremely busy. Book 2 weeks ahead
- Presidents Day Weekend (February): Second busiest weekend after Christmas
- Opening weekends (late November/early December): Surprise demand spikes when snow reports are good
Ski Gear Logistics
- Standard sedan: 2 ski bags + 2 boot bags + 2 suitcases (tight but manageable for 2 people)
- SUV (Escalade): 4-6 people comfortably with full ski kit
- Sprinter Van: Groups of 6-14 with all equipment — best for large ski parties
- Deer Valley's ski concierge will store arriving gear if your room isn't ready
Ride-Share Warnings
- Uber/Lyft surge pricing hits 3-5x on powder days and peak arrival windows
- Many Uber/Lyft drivers refuse canyon routes in heavy snow (low-clearance vehicles)
- App pool of drivers near SLC Airport is thin compared to major metros
- Wait times of 30-60 min are common after peak arrivals (5-8 PM flights)

Delta Air Lines is the dominant carrier at SLC with approximately 45% of flights, operating from Concourses A and B. United Airlines, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Alaska Airlines, JetBlue, Frontier, Spirit, and British Airways (seasonal) also serve SLC. The new terminal consolidates all airlines under one roof across three concourses.
Does Salt Lake City Airport have light rail service?
Yes. TRAX Green Line connects SLC Airport to downtown Salt Lake City in 26 minutes. The station is on Level 1 of the terminal — no shuttle required. However, TRAX does not serve ski resorts. Car service is required for Park City, Deer Valley, Snowbird, Alta, and all other mountain destinations.
How much does car service from SLC to Park City cost?
Car service from SLC to Park City runs approximately $95-$130 for a sedan and $140-$175 for an SUV. Deer Valley is $105-$140 for a sedan. Snowbird and the Cottonwood Canyons resorts are $85-$115. What is the new Salt Lake City Airport terminal like?
The new SLC terminal opened in phases starting in 2020, replacing the old 1960s facility. It is a single building with Concourses A, B, and C connected by a central corridor — no AirTrain or interterminal buses. The design features mountain-inspired architecture, floor-to-ceiling views of the Wasatch Range, expanded local dining, and a modern Ground Transportation Center directly connected to the terminal.
Which ski resorts are closest to Salt Lake City Airport?
The closest ski resorts are in the Cottonwood Canyons: Snowbird (26 miles, 35-50 min), Alta (28 miles, 40-55 min), Brighton (28 miles), and Solitude (27 miles). Park City Mountain Resort and Deer Valley are 36-38 miles via I-80 East, taking 40-65 minutes. All require car service as TRAX does not extend to mountain communities.
Where do car services pick up at SLC Airport?
Prearranged car service and black car operators use the Ground Transportation Center (GTC) on Level 1, directly connected to the terminal. Your driver will meet you in the baggage claim area holding a name sign, then escort you to the vehicle. Allow 15-20 minutes from landing to meet your driver, plus additional time if you have ski bags or oversized equipment.
Does SLC have a Delta Sky Club?
Yes. SLC has Delta Sky Clubs in both Concourse A and Concourse B (post-security). Access requires Delta Sky Club membership, Delta Platinum or Diamond Medallion status, or eligible credit cards (Amex Platinum, Delta Reserve Amex). Both clubs feature mountain views, local food options, and shower facilities.
