NYC Gridlock Alert Days 2026: What They Are, the Remaining Dates, and How to Plan Airport and City Rides

By Detailed Drivers·Published October 4, 2026·Updated October 4, 2026

Gridlock Alert Days are the dates NYC DOT expects to be the slowest traffic days of the year. Fifteen of the 20 dates for 2026 are still ahead: November 18, 19 and 24, and twelve weekdays from December 2 to December 23. Leave earlier for airport rides on those days; a Business Sedan from JFK to Midtown is still an estimated $220 all-in. Detailed Drivers is a New York chauffeur service rated 5.0 across 188 Google reviews.

What is a Gridlock Alert Day?

According to NYC DOT's Gridlock Alert Days page, the department designates the busiest traffic days of the year as Gridlock Alert Days, “the days when traffic is expected to be at its slowest and most congested.” On those days DOT monitors traffic and makes real-time adjustments to traffic signals, and it urges New Yorkers and visitors to walk, bike or take public transportation instead of driving when possible.

A Gridlock Alert is a warning, not a rule. It does not close streets, ban vehicles or change parking rules on its own. Street closures come from separate sources: event permits, NYPD notices and the city's weekly traffic advisory. The alert tells you that the whole street network will be slower than usual, especially in Manhattan.

What are the 2026 Gridlock Alert Days?

NYC DOT lists 20 Gridlock Alert Days for 2026. The first five, the week of the UN General Assembly in late September, have passed. The remaining 15 run from mid-November to the day before Christmas Eve, and every one is a weekday.

The December cluster is the one to plan around. Alerts fall in four separate December weeks, including Tuesday to Friday of the second and third weeks, which is when office parties, shopping and holiday shows peak in Midtown. December 2 is also the Rockefeller Center tree lighting, which brings its own NYPD closures, and November 24 is the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, covered in our Thanksgiving 2026 NYC airport travel guide. For the rest of the season, see our NYC holiday season transportation guide.

How should you plan an airport ride on a Gridlock Alert Day?

The airport end is rarely the problem. The slow part is getting out of Manhattan, especially crosstown through Midtown and onto the bridges and tunnels in the afternoon. Four habits help:

  • Leave earlier than you would on an ordinary weekday, and treat late afternoon as the worst window.
  • Pick a pickup point on a through avenue rather than a side street that may be blocked by deliveries.
  • Keep the Port Authority's rule: at the airport two hours before a domestic flight, three before international.
  • For arrivals, give the flight number. We track it, so the pickup moves with the actual landing time.

The Port Authority made the same point in its 2025 Thanksgiving advisory, which asked all travelers to allow additional time or take transit, and warned that JFK construction had changed roadways and for-hire pickup areas. Book through our JFK airport car service, LaGuardia car service or Newark airport car service pages. Airport pickups include 45 minutes of complimentary waiting for domestic flights and 60 minutes for international flights, starting when the flight actually lands. We track your flight.

JFK ↔ Midtown$220 all-in$270 all-in$670 all-in
LGA ↔ Midtown$180 all-in$210 all-in$600 all-in
EWR ↔ Midtown$220 all-in$260 all-in$660 all-in

All-in — gratuity, tax & card processing included, rounded to the nearest $10; the Port Authority airport access fee and the MTA and New York State per-trip charges are already included. Point-to-point estimates are the same on Gridlock Alert Days; they are estimates, not binding quotes. Mercedes S-Class is available in select markets on request.

On-Time Guarantee: if your chauffeur is not at the pickup address on your booking by your scheduled pickup time, we refund the full fare. It covers every booking, every vehicle and every city, 24/7. The guarantee applies to the address and time on your booking; if you change either, it follows the updated details we confirm. For airport pickups we track your flight, so your pickup time follows the actual landing and your chauffeur is waiting when you land and texts you.

How should you plan rides inside the city on those days?

Stack meetings by neighborhood. A day that crosses Midtown three times will lose more time on a Gridlock Alert Day than one that works downtown in the morning and Midtown in the afternoon. When the day has several stops, book by the hour: the car waits nearby instead of rejoining traffic between each meeting. An hourly car service in New York City runs $120/hr all-in for a Business Sedan and $150/hr all-in for a First Class SUV, with a 3-hour minimum ($360 all-in for the sedan).

For a single trip, point-to-point is usually better value even on a slow day, because the estimate does not rise with traffic. Overtime is billed for the actual additional minutes at the applicable per-minute rate for your selected vehicle. Teams moving between offices and events can share a Sprinter van in NYC, and companies booking many rides through the December alert weeks usually set up an account with our corporate car service in New York.

On the day, two free city tools help: DOT's weekly traffic advisory for planned closures and the city's real-time traffic cameras for a look at a bridge or avenue before you leave.

Is a Gridlock Alert Day the same as congestion pricing?

No. Congestion pricing is a toll for driving into Manhattan at or below 60th Street, and it applies every day. A Gridlock Alert Day is a traffic warning for specific dates and costs nothing by itself. The two often get mixed up because both are about Midtown traffic. For a Detailed Drivers booking, neither shows up as an extra line: our quotes are all-in, with the airport access fee and the MTA and New York State per-trip charges already included. Our NYC congestion pricing guide explains the toll itself.

What happened to the September dates?

The first five 2026 Gridlock Alert Days, September 21 to 25, covered the week the UN General Assembly general debate opened on September 22, when NYPD security zones around the UN close streets on the East Side. Our UNGA week traffic guide covers that pattern for next year. NYC DOT's page also keeps older lists for comparison: in 2019 it named 16 days across late September and November and December.

What should you send when you book on a Gridlock Alert Day?

  • Exact pickup address and the best through-avenue corner nearby.
  • Flight number for any airport leg, outbound or arrival.
  • The latest time you can arrive, so dispatch can set the pickup time with slack.
  • All stops in order, if you are booking by the hour.
  • Passenger count, bags and the mobile number for the chauffeur to text.

Compare vehicles on our all-in chauffeur rates page, then book through car service reservations or call (888) 420-0177. More route and event planning lives on the Detailed Drivers blog. Free cancellation up to 48 hours before pickup for sedans and SUVs, 72 hours for Sprinters. No charge if your flight is cancelled. Event and high-demand bookings follow the window in your quote.

NYC Gridlock Alert Days 2026 FAQs

What is a Gridlock Alert Day in NYC?

It is one of the days NYC DOT expects to be the busiest traffic days of the year, when traffic is at its slowest and most congested. On those days DOT monitors traffic and adjusts signals in real time, and it urges New Yorkers and visitors to walk, bike or take transit instead of driving when possible.

What are the remaining 2026 Gridlock Alert Days?

After the five September dates, NYC DOT lists November 18, 19 and 24, and December 2, 3, 4, 8, 9, 10, 11, 15, 16, 17, 18 and 23, 2026. That is 15 of the year's 20 Gridlock Alert Days, all between mid-November and Christmas.

Do car services charge more on Gridlock Alert Days?

Detailed Drivers does not. Point-to-point estimates are the same as any other day, for example $220 all-in for a Business Sedan between JFK and Midtown. On hourly bookings the extra drive time is billed as time, at $120/hr all-in for a Business Sedan.

How much extra time should I allow for a JFK ride on a Gridlock Alert Day?

There is no official number, because the delay depends on where in Manhattan you start and when. Leave earlier than you would on a normal weekday, avoid crosstown legs through Midtown in the late afternoon, and keep the Port Authority's rule of arriving two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international one.

Does a Gridlock Alert Day mean streets are closed?

No. A Gridlock Alert is a congestion warning, not a closure order. Closures come from separate event permits and NYPD notices, such as the Rockefeller Center tree lighting on December 2. Check NYC DOT's weekly traffic advisory for closures in the same week.

Is Thanksgiving Day a Gridlock Alert Day?

No. In 2026 the Thanksgiving-week Gridlock Alert Day is Tuesday, November 24. Thanksgiving Day, November 26, has the Macy's parade closures in Manhattan but is not on DOT's Gridlock Alert list.
