TPA's Unique Landside/Airside Design
Tampa International Airport opened in 1971 with a design concept unlike any other airport in the world at the time. Rather than one massive terminal building, TPA separates passenger functions into two distinct areas:
Landside Terminal
The main building where you check in, drop bags, and collect luggage after landing. Also where you find the SkyConnect station, rental car facility, ground transportation, rideshare/car service pickup, and all hotel/airport connector shuttle pickups.

Airside Terminals (A, C, E, F)
Four separate satellite buildings connected to the Landside Terminal by the SkyConnect APM (automated people mover). Security screening happens on Level 3 of the Landside Terminal, then you ride the SkyConnect to your airside. Each airside has its own gates, restaurants, shops, and (in some cases) lounges.

This design dramatically reduces walking distances — most gates are within 2-3 minutes of security. It also reduces congestion in the main terminal since the concourses are separate buildings. The downside: if you need to change airlines (say your connection switches from Southwest in Airside A to American in Airside C), you must ride back to the Landside Terminal and take a different SkyConnect train.
Airside-by-Airside Breakdown
Southwest Airlines is TPA's largest carrier and operates primarily from Airside A. Expect very high foot traffic during Southwest peak departure windows. Gates A1-A28. Spirit Airlines and Frontier also use Airside A.
Dining: Expanded food court with Dunkin', various local vendors. Lounges: No major airline lounges in Airside A.
Airside C handles American Airlines (AA's primary hub connections to DFW, CLT, JFK) and Delta Air Lines (connections to ATL, JFK, LAX). Gates C1-C30. The American Admirals Club and Delta Sky Club are both located in Airside C.
Lounges: American Admirals Club and Delta Sky Club. Dining: Expanded concessions including local Tampa restaurant concepts.
Airside E hosts United Airlines (connections to EWR, ORD, SFO, IAH), Alaska Airlines (SEA, PDX, LAX), JetBlue (JFK, BOS, FLL), and Breeze Airways. Gates E1-E22. The United Club is located in Airside E.
Lounges: United Club. Notable: Breeze Airways (founded 2021) operates Tampa as a focus city with non-stop routes to underserved markets.
Airside F is TPA's international terminal. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) processing happens in the Landside Terminal after international arrivals. Airside F hosts British Airways (London Heathrow seasonal), Condor (Frankfurt seasonal), and select Caribbean/Latin American carriers.
International arrivals: After landing at Airside F, ride SkyConnect to Landside Terminal, clear CBP on Level 2, collect bags at baggage claim, then proceed to Ground Transportation Level 1.

Important: TPA Has No Direct Light Rail
Tampa International Airport does not have direct light rail or metro service. The HART Metrobus system serves the airport (Routes 30X and 30), connecting to downtown Tampa in about 35-45 minutes, but buses are not practical for most travelers with luggage.
Brightline is expanding in Florida but does not serve TPA as of 2026. The closest rail connection for most visitors remains Orlando's Brightline (from OIA), which is a 1-hour drive from TPA. Tampa car service is the primary practical ground transportation option from Tampa Airport.
